Youth Art Month

Did you know that March is Youth Art Month? Each year during the month of March schools around the county celebrate art made by children. In Fulton County each school sends two amazing artworks to the Fulton Schools Administration Building to be in the Youth Art Month Show. I just finished packing up the artwork for this year and wanted to announce this year's artists who are representing Abbotts Hill. I sent a beautiful watercolor painting of winter trees by Sophia H. in 5th grade and a great antler study drawing/painting set by Christine K. in 3rd grade. Congratulations to Sophia and Christine! I forgot to take a photo of the artwork before I wrapped it up so I'll post one when the work returns in April.

Publix display

Our bulletin board that you may remember from our local Publix has finally been rehung! I went by and hung some wonderful warm and cool city paintings by first grade students recently and thought I'd share a photo I snapped while there. If you want to see these pieces in person check by the pharmacy window!



The following first graders have work represented: Dylan, Julian, Connor, Stephanie, Ryan, Gabriel, Sophie, Mateo, Hunter, Bryson, Zaina, Tori, Amanda, Ansley, Brian, Anthony, Maya, and Natalie.

Paper Sculptures

Third grade students recently made paper sculptures out of folded Post-It notes. Before beginning the artwork students had to plan a balanced design and choose a color scheme. Next, students carefully folded the papers and attached them to a backing paper in the order of their color plan. This artwork is currently on display in the main hallway. Everyone who walks by has had nice comments about the artwork! Great job third grade!

Wire Shoes

Fifth Grade recently created wire shoes after studying contour line and Alexander Calder’s wire sculptures. The shoes have been on display on the main hall since the Fun Run last month and are now coming down. Here are a few photos for those who did not get the chance to check them out! Students even formed their intials for their signature out of the wire!

China's Terracotta Army at the High Museum

The High Museum in Atlanta has an amazing new exhibit! The First Emperor: China’s Terracotta Army will be available for viewing until April 19. I highly recommend everyone makes the trip to Atlanta to view the exhibit! This Saturday is a perfect opportunity to visit since it is Fulton County Free Saturday! On the first Saturday of every month the High Museum welcomes Fulton County residents to the museum for free!

Guest Artist

I invited guest quilt artist Debra Svitil to present her work to the students last Wednesday during Early Release Day. The students really enjoyed her presentation about her quilts and all want me to read them the book that she showed them called The Quiltmaker's Gift. They are also very interested in making a quilt of their own! Since giving to charities is a big part of quilting culture, Mrs. Svitil has offered to help our students make quilts to be donated to local charities like Children's Hospital! The 8 classes who viewed the presentation will create quilt block designs that Mrs. Svitil will make into quilts. She says the 160 blocks we create will make about 4 quilts! It sure would be amazing if every student in the school could participate in this project. If anyone else out there could help us make some quilts for charity please let me know! We have about 640 additional students in our school which sounds like 16 more quilts... wow that sure could make a difference to someone who needed some Holiday Cheer!
